Fix the Chart

In this activity you will be presented with 4 cases across different business scenarios. For each chart:

  1. Read the setting and understand the intended use.
  2. Identify the problems with each chart.
  3. Redesign the chart, keeping in mind the intended use. You may change the data being displayed, chart form, encoding, arrangement, annotations, etc.
  4. Prepare to present your redesign to the class.

You may work in groups of up to 4.

Case 01 · Pilot evaluation

Should a scheduling pilot be expanded?

Setting and intended use

A meal-delivery company tested a new scheduling system for one month. Average delivery time fell from 34.1 to 31.4 minutes. Operations leadership needs to understand both the direction and practical size of the change.

Case 02 · Retention planning

Which customers need the most attention?

Setting and intended use

A subscription company surveyed customers on a five-level satisfaction scale. Product leaders want to compare the response distributions for Basic, Plus, and Enterprise plans. The team will use the patterns to decide which customer segment should receive the next retention intervention and how urgent that response should be.

Case 03 · Pricing review

Did Enterprise performance change after Q5?

Setting and intended use

A B2B company changed the Enterprise plan’s price at the start of Q5. The analytics team tracks that plan alongside nine other customer segments over eight quarters. Executives need to trace Enterprise performance before and after the change, while retaining enough portfolio context to judge whether its movement is unusual.

Case 04 · Supplier quality

Which supplier should be audited first?

Setting and intended use

A retailer has one supplier-quality team available for an audit. The chart reports defective units found last quarter. Shipment volumes differed substantially: Supplier A shipped 10,000 units; B, 2,400; C, 5,500; D, 1,000; and E, 1,200. Procurement wants to identify the supplier with the highest underlying defect risk.
